Homeless Food Outreach

...by Kathy A Smith

During our family's six month stay here in India each year as missionaries, things do get a little challenging sometimes. Just recently, for three days we had no LP gas for cooking. Even when we can cook, there is only a limited selection of food we enjoy, unlike in the US. At this same time, we had no running water for six days. During the months of December, January, and February, the days are steaming hot, but the nights get a little cool, and sometimes it gets a little frustrating waking up to a cold shower every morning, that is, when we do have running water. The electricity also goes off many times throughout each week. Lots of creepy critters come inside the house we are renting, like huge cockroaches, spiders, frogs, and lizards. But these trials are only a very tiny sacrifice compared to what Jesus did for us when He shed His precious blood on the cross for our sins. It is so wonderful to serve Him and to be a part of sharing His Gospel and serving those in need! Our light affliction is very small considering what we have been seeing in the remote villages.

My heart is sorrowful to share all these things with you, but the longer we are here in India the more grievous sights we are seeing. One night we had a food outreach to homeless people and children here in Dindigul who were sleeping on the streets. We saw some with epilepsy, mental disorders, missing body parts, leprosy, and more, many of them children and elderly people.

.My heart was broken to see them weakened with hunger and chills from laying on the damp ground. I can't even imagine having to live through that kind of suffering. The people were very happy to receive the food from us and we hope to do more outreaches among the hurting and desperate as the Lord provides with our new Good Samaritan fund.
